11. Blues Head, 2012

My earliest attempts at song writing began with the need to write songs for the Real Gooduns’ Long Island sessions for Daffidil Records, 1971. I continued and continue to write songs after retiring from playing gigs with bands in 2003. In 2010 I got a call from Michael McMillan (Guitar Mikey) who had moved to the States a few years back and was then living in Jackson, Mississippi. He was putting an album together of original songs but he needed more that he had written himself, did I have any he might be able to use. Well indeed I did. I sent him 4 songs I had that I thought would fit the bill. And after some subtle changes in the lyrics to suit his styly they ended up on his Out of the Box CD on the Earwig Music Company’s label, CD 4965 released in 2012. Listen below…..

He also recorded 3 other songs I had written and had given to him back in 1989 for a cassette he produced along with Bill Verutis as a step on the way to trying for a recording deal with a label. He reworked the arrangements some for the Earwig CD. They were “Blues Attack”, “It’s A Sin” and ‘Heart Shakin’ Mama”. Robert Latzer has a co-writing credit on “Heart Shakin’ Mama” Listen to them below…..

The musicians on “Out of the Box’ besides McMillan on guitar, vocals and bass at times were: Billy Gibson, harmonica; Marty Richards, drums; Mark Vacovone, drums and organ; Peter Nunn, piano; Lee Williams, drums; Daddy Rich, bass; Alphonso Sanders, sax; Super Chicken, guitar; Nellie ‘Tiger’ Travis, vocals; the Hammerhead Horns under the direction of Richard Putnum. Special thanks to Michael McMillan for his amazing arrangements and coming up with that fabulous ending to Blues Head.
